EV FIRE SAFE
EV FireSafe is a research project aiming to identify the risks to emergency responders when attending an electric vehicle (EV) lithium traction battery fire, particularly where that vehicle is connected to energised charging.
If you're an emergency responder, it makes sense to assume you could be dealing with an electric vehicle every time you turn out. If you have EV charging at your commercial sites, work as a tow truck driver, in roadside assist, as a mechanic, car dealer, or vehicle transport, storage & wrecking, knowing the signs that an electric vehicle is about to catch fire is vital to your safety.
EV FireSafe has been researching electric vehicle battery fires & what they mean for emergency responders, both here in Australia & internationally. This work has been funded by the Department of Defence with assistance from Deakin University. EV battery fires are very rare, but they pose new & challenging risks to emergency responders.
The video below is an introduction to their work & a high level look at what we've found.
